iCub Review: IIT’s Open Research Humanoid, Not a Factory Worker

iCub is IIT’s open cognitive-robotics biped. Labs use it. Nobody should score it 9.0 as a product.

iCub Review: IIT’s Open Research Humanoid, Not a Factory Worker

Quick Answer

iCub is the Italian Institute of Technology’s open research humanoid — a child-size biped built so labs can study perception, language and motor learning. It is not a warehouse SKU and it is not in the same buying class as Optimus or Figure 02. A default 9.0 score was a template lie.

Our Verdict

Field Rating Notes
Overall Review Score 5.8 / 10 As a 2026 purchase. 7.4 as a published research platform.
Research usefulness 7.4 / 10 Open software, many papers, real lab deployments.
Commercial readiness 2.0 / 10 Inquiry pricing. No consumer MSRP.
Consumer readiness 0.5 / 10 Wrong robot for a home.
Autonomy confidence Supervised / task-limited Cognitive-robotics stack, not a job-done claim.

What it is

A full bipedal research humanoid from Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, grown out of the RobotCub project. Public technical material puts it around 105 cm and about 33 kg with the battery backpack (30 kg without), with a 53-degree-of-freedom body. That is a child-scale research torso, not a pallet mover.

What is published

IIT publishes hardware notes and an open software story. A 2019 technical sheet still listed a 36 V 9 Ah battery as not available yet — which is the kind of honest gap a template FAQ used to paper over.

Labs around the world run copies. That is the public evidence: papers, Git repositories, workshop photos. There is no factory cycle-time, no warranty card, and no list price we can treat as current.

Flaws

You do not buy iCub the way you buy a Unitree G1. Support is a research relationship. Hands, tendon routing and the battery backpack are lab-maintenance problems. Comparing it to Atlas or Apollo in a five-name compare block was copy-paste, not analysis.

Real-world usefulness

High if you need an open humanoid for cognitive robotics. Near zero if you need a shift worker. If that is you, stop here and read a current industrial review instead.

FAQ

Can I buy iCub?

Not as a normal product. IIT-style research platforms are priced by inquiry.

Is iCub the same as NAO?

No. NAO is Aldebaran’s smaller education biped. Different company, different robot.

Who made it?

Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia.
